Michigan Future Educator Fellowship
Up to $10,000 per year toward your Teachers of Tomorrow program, renewable for up to three years.
How this works
The fellowship is awarded by the State of Michigan. Teachers of Tomorrow confirms your eligibility with the State, you choose your program here, and once the State pays on your behalf we refund what you have paid.

- Teachers of TomorrowWe confirm your eligibilityWe review your application against the program rules and confirm it with the State. You don't need to do anything for this step.
- YouChoose your programWe email you a personal link. Open it, pick your program, tick the confirmation box and type your name to sign. It takes about two minutes, and you get a copy by email. The same link then shows your status at any time.
- You + the StateFinish your paperwork with TreasurySubmit all required documentation to the Michigan Department of Treasury. We then request payment from the State on your behalf.
- Teachers of TomorrowWe refund what you paidWhen the State's payment arrives, everything you have paid — enrollment and program fees — is refunded to you, and we email you when the reimbursement is processed (allow 10–14 days to receive it). Until then you remain responsible for payments under your payment agreement.
How to apply
- Submit the FAFSA at studentaid.gov, before you start the Fellowship application. Teachers of Tomorrow does not appear in the FAFSA school list — report any prior institution, then update your school to Teachers of Tomorrow in your state record.
- Create a MiSSG Student Portal account at michigan.gov/mistudentaid/missg.
- Complete the Fellowship application inside MiSSG and list Teachers of Tomorrow as your Educator Preparation Program.
- Be admitted and fully enrolled in Teachers of Tomorrow — admission letter received, enrollment fee paid, and program fees paid in full or on a payment plan.
Who is eligible
- Admitted to and fully enrolled in Teachers of Tomorrow, pursuing initial teacher certification
- Hold a bachelor's degree or higher (required by Teachers of Tomorrow; the State also requires a high school diploma or equivalency certificate)
- Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (current coursework, or prior undergraduate/graduate transcript)
- Michigan resident — dependent students' parents must have been Michigan residents since July 1 of the previous year
- Enrolled full time (or the alternative-certification equivalent)
- Not receiving Grow Your Own, Educator Workforce Innovation, or Educator Development and Retention program funds at the same time
To renew (up to 3 years)
Stay continuously enrolled full time, earn the equivalent of 24 credits per year, maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress and a 3.0 GPA, take part in academic and career advising, file the FAFSA each year, and remain a Michigan resident.
Your teaching commitment
Recipients agree to teach in a Michigan public, nonpublic, or preschool program:
- 1 year of funding → 3 years of teaching
- 2 years of funding → 4 years of teaching
- 3 years of funding → 5 years of teaching
Teaching in a critical-needs district may reduce the commitment. If the commitment is not met, or the certification program is not finished, the fellowship converts to a 0% interest loan repayable over 10 years.
